The economics programme provides a solid foundation – both quantitatively and qualitatively – for students to think and analyse like an economist. However, little did I know how versatile the subject could be, touching on topics related to psychology, data science, law, and so much more. This motivates me to encourage others, accept different perspectives, and appreciate the way of interdisciplinary learning.

During my time at CUHK, I have learnt and experienced lots of different things – both academically and career-wise – in relation to consulting and research. I worked in a company as an international research analyst with the help of the CUHK Co-op Programme. I was also able to work as a part-time research assistant in the sociology department, using statistical techniques to analyse international migration.

This programme has taught me always to be open-minded – not to limit myself and make the most of every opportunity.

Economics brings me a pair of systematic and quantitative lenses to understand human beings and the society. During my time in CUHK Economics, I was fortunate to have encountered a diverse community of teachers and classmates who were enthusiastic about exploring the rationales of our place; we enjoyed asking questions and finding answers to them. Speaking of the knowledge foundation and analytic toolkit equipment, the department offered a wide range of courses, workshops and seminars that provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the subject with extremely high flexibility in schedule planning. I am cordially grateful for all the opportunities and experiences the department has afforded me that have shaped me not only as a research student but also as a critical thinker in life.

2015 Graduate, Hong Kong
Economist, Financial Secretary’s Office, HKSAR Government

CUHK Economics has given me four years of fruitful university life. The rigorous training has equipped me with solid knowledge of economic theories and a critical mindset to analyse the problem from an economic perspective. These skills are very useful for my postgraduate study (M.Phil in Economics, CUHK, 2018) and my current job as a professional economist. Apart from the academic aspect, CUHK Economics also offers internships and exchange opportunities that are exclusive to economics major students. I went on a full-year exchange to the University of Mannheim in Germany during my final year of study, which was definitely the highlight of my undergraduate experience.

CUHK Economics offers the most comprehensive academic programmes in economics among all the institutions in Hong Kong. The curriculum is well-structured in a way that we can choose from a wide range of economics courses. Students with different interests and career goals can personalize their own academic exposure according to their needs. CUHK Economics is renowned for its high standard of analytical and quantitative training. Business schools may not be able to offer such training. Going through the rigorous training is absolutely essential for a professional economist.
